Speaking of simplifying our lives, let me ask if you have a collection of DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, Betamax tapes, cassettes, 8-tracks, or other old formats cluttering up your house or garage.
When technology advances, we move with it, but we foolishly hang on to old technology. All of our music CDs have been transferred to our digital playlist. Why do we need the physical disks now? We don’t have anything to play cassettes or VHS tapes anymore. Why are we storing boxes of them in the garage?
We keep other useless things of the past too. That oh-so-ugly vase can’t be donated because it used to belong to Aunt Bonnie. That bag of tarnished silver plate is the one Cecil pulled up from the lake bottom when he was fishing back in 1967. And we can’t donate Grandpa’s combat boots, can we?
Yes, we can. We can free ourselves NOW from the things we will be freed from when we die. Why wait for that day, letting these sad objects weigh us down for the rest of our lives?
Most of our children and grandchildren have their own more contemporary tastes and don’t want to inherit our stuff anyway. Let’s sell it online and use the money in some life-giving way. If we can’t sell it, we can donate it to someone else to sell. “You can’t take it with you,” they say. So why not let go of it now?
